Frequently asked questions

What is the NATO phonetic alphabet?

The NATO phonetic alphabet assigns a code word to each letter, from Alfa to Zulu, to make spelling clearer over radio and telephone connections. It is a spelling alphabet, rather than a system for transcribing speech sounds.

Is it Alfa or Alpha, and Juliett or Juliet?

The official code words are Alfa and Juliett. These spellings help speakers of different languages pronounce them consistently. Reverse mode also accepts the common Alpha and Juliet spellings.

How do you say numbers in the phonetic alphabet?

Say each digit separately. This tool uses the radio pronunciations Tree for 3, Fower for 4, Fife for 5 and Niner for 9. The chart shows English pronunciation hints for every digit.

Can I spell an email address or decode code words?

Yes. Forward mode spells letters, digits and common email punctuation such as At sign and Dot. Reverse mode converts code words back to uppercase letters; separate words with a slash. Unrecognized tokens are shown in brackets, not silently discarded.

Is my input saved, and how accurate is the audio?

The tool does not upload or save your input. Read aloud uses your browser and device speech service, whose processing and voices depend on your settings. Audio is a convenience and may differ from official radio pronunciation; use the printed pronunciation hints as a reference.
